BackSt Philip's March On into Semi-Finals
Pensford 2-4 St Philip's (Joe'2, George'2)
This evening, St Philip's produced a stirring performance to defeat a strong Pensford side. In a humdinger of a match, which swayed one way, then the other, late goals from George and Joe were to prove decisive.
The match began slowly, each team taking time to suss each the other out; however, it was St Philip's who began to dominate, and after a number of chances misses, Joe scored. 1-0.
This was how the half ended, but the real drama unfolded in the second half. Facing downhill, St Philip's carried on how they ended the first half, with wave after wave of attack; most memorably, a stinging shot from Freddie being palmed over by the Pensford goalkeeper. It was the other end that then saw goalmouth action: a speculative hit from a full 30 yards out deceived the St Philip's back line and Pensford had drawn level. A minute later and Pensford had the lead, the ball being knocked in after a goal-line scramble. Yet St Philip's did not give up. A fierce volley from George went just wide, and then a delightful move on the left-hand side: Nathanael to Freddie, the ball ending back at George's feet and after a deflection the ball cannoned into the net. 2-2. Not a moment later and St Philip's re-took the lead: another surge forward from George (the man of the match) and another shot which the keeper could not quite keep out. The icing on the cake was provided by Joe, whose goal made it 4-2. It could easily have been more. St Philip's now await their semi-final opponent.
